By public transport

The public transportation in Spain is very well arranged with trains, buses and taxis. There are also rental cars available. The bus and taxi are the most common used forms of public transport. Though the subway is also a frequently used form of public transport, this is only well arranged in the major cities. The train is usually used for a little longer distance. The state-run RENFE is the most used train service for these distances. This company has several train services which include high speed trains and suburban lines. The TALGO is used for long journeys. Train tickets for the state-run RENFE can be purchased in advance from main stations, ticket agents and authorized travel agents. TALGO trains are to be pre-booked.

Though Spain has many private owned bus services, the most common used for long and short distances is the HIFE bus. Generally public buses are of a high standard, well maintained and cheap. Most towns have a bus terminal ‘estacion de autobus’. When waiting at a bus stop, do note the bus will only stop if you wave it over.

Taxis can be found at every airport and in big cities they can also be stopped on the street. They usually have a general stand in the city center where mostly also buses to all routes within the city can be found. Car rental companies are very common in Spain and can be found at every major airport and in almost every major city.

Smoking is not allowed on any public transport in Spain. Note that most public transport services do not operate on weekends, or very little. Longer waiting periods have to be taken in account. Most hotels have a shuttle service, that will take you from the airport to your hotel.
